We only use digital x-rays in our office. Digital dental x-rays are an exciting new alternative to conventional dental x-rays. The digital dental x-ray process is similar to conventional x-rays except it uses various types of computer sensors (depending on brand) that the computer reads and turns into an x-ray image rather than traditional x-ray film.
The advantages of digital dental x-rays are numerous:
- Digital x-rays use up to 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays.
- Having the image on a computer allows us to use software to aid in diagnosis.
- It allows us to zoom in on areas and change contrast for early detection of cavities.
- It measures density in different areas.
Digital x-rays are also environmentally-friendly. Conventional dental film has a lead foil backing and requires toxic chemicals to develop. Digital x-rays do not generate waste lead foil or require dumping chemicals down the drain.
